Stephen Hiam aka Stink!
"The STiNK is an alter ego which allows me to reach into the areas of life which i feel should be treated with respect and devotion. Emotions that are not at all pretty, a world where not everything is saccharine. The STiNK is a statement, a calling, asking you to spend a moment looking at the self, your world and the beauty and terror that can be found within." says the British Artist Steve Hiam aka "Stink!" that resides in Berlin since a couple of years now.
Born and bread in the city of London Stink! lost his artlessness pretty early to the vibrant graffiti-scene of his hometown. Soon it was clear that art is a passion Stink! wants to make his living of - but live likes to take turns and after he was suggested to leave Chelsea School of Art Stink! moved into high end computer graphic design and became an internationally awarded Music and Commercial Video Director, never leaving trace on his art career.
It is interesting to see how Stink! manages to combine the different stages of his life into his unique and very contemporary view of the world. In his "Fallen Series" for example you can feel his graffiti past by the usage of outlines and colours. Though Stink! studies the ways of traditional oil painting a lot you can also tell the graphic training and talent in his works. At the same time these paintings show a lot of his work as movie maker and director - like frames of a movie Stink! overlays stills of a movement with each other which makes his works look very vividly or even animated. By this Stink! turns his own very personal experience into a point of view that can easily be shared by the most and reflects on our modern perception schooled by music video, movies or digital advertising.
