HELMUT NEY

Naive wood sculptures

Self-taught Helmut Ney is a naive wood sculptor who uses a chainsaw and acrylic paints to create totemic figures that conjure up the heroes of our childhood television screens:

Ney creates cheerful fetish statuettes of the television age and draws on the huge arsenal of vintage TV toys, whose magic he seeks to trace with extremely reduced means and an impressively pared-down formal language.

The result is mythical ancestor figures of the action heroes of our pop culture – totems of television & statues of socialisation – archaic, cheeky and unpolished and yet colourful and highly topical.
